THE ARTS GREEN BOOK – Sustainable Buildings

The Arts Green Book : Sustainable Buildings shows how to make our cultural buildings more sustainable, even though many of them are ageing and starved of investment. It’s designed for executive directors and facilities managers, for boards, funders, local authorities and designers – for anyone who faces the challenge of taking a cultural building and making it fit for purpose in the context of the climate emergency.
Cultural buildings include concert halls, museums and galleries, libraries and archives, music venues and cinemas, arts centres and multi-artform buildings. These are some of our most valued, most loved and most prominent public buildings. But they also include workspace for the arts: studios for fashion, sculpture , fine art and craft, rehearsal rooms, studios and stores.

If we want the arts to point society towards a sustainable future, then we urgently need to regenerate arts buildings to suit a world of life-threatening temperature rise, over-exploited resources, and declining biodiversity.

That journey will never be easy – cultural organisations know how hard it is to raise funds for investment. But it is essential. Sustainable Buildings gives clear guidance for assessing the challenge, selecting priorities – and setting out on the journey.
